The much touted Uganda Airlines will be taking to the skies within the week. As many wait with bated breath, the planes which will be flying the country’s flags high are expected to plough a root on the August 28th. Speaking to a local daily, the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Works and Transport,

Waiswa Bageya, said Uganda Airlines is an infrastructure development like roads and railway with several benefits to the country.

"The revival of Uganda Airlines is in the National Resistance Movement manifesto and National Development Plan," he said. He added that Uganda Airlines which will take off on August 28, is an infrastructure in terms of air transportation.

However, according to the Ministry of Works spokesperson Susan Kataike the inaugural flight is now set for today, Tuesday, and will carry technical officers, government officials, and media to Nairobi.  She says that the 55 minute flight will depart from Entebbe Airport to Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) at 10am. She notes however that business for the airline starts tomorrow at 6am!

Like Kataike, Bageya is quite optimistic that the airline will be vital for the tourism industry and export of goods especially the perishable goods. "Uganda Airlines will boost Uganda's tourism industry because tourists used to spend hours at Dubai Airport to get connecting flights to Uganda,” he started. “But with Uganda Airlines, we can fly tourists straight from London or from Dubai and any other Asian cities to Entebbe using our direct flights which we have planned to have in place.”

The discussion around this very important event is that many worry it might be a burden on the already debt ridden economy. Arguments against it have been drawn from neighbouring countries like Kenya where the government has had to come in to bail the national airline. Many frequent fliers however maintain that this will save on the time spent on several connecting roots. Even as the country goes into a debate of whether this is a welcome move or not, many will agree that this will be a moment to behold.
