Entebbe Town

It is one of those Ugandan Districts many can’t help but fall in love with as it is full of WOW moments (covering an area of approximately 56.2 Sq km). These cut across from its scenic-beachfront-horizons, to its cleanness, endless list of holiday getaways and of course, the always happy people.

According to Vincent De Paul Kayanja, Mayor of the peninsular Municipality it was once planned to be the capital of Uganda, a position it served prior to Uganda’s Independence in 1962. After Independence, this status would be shifted to Kampala as it was more spacious.

Despite this shift though, the town which sits at an altitude of 1200m – 1325m above sea level still comes across as Uganda’s trendsetter, especially in terms of organization and infrastructural development. That’s why there couldn’t have been a better location for the country’s main airport than it, Entebbe International Airport.

Entebbe offers the first impression of Uganda, like a door offers a first impression to a home. In is an inviting place, a reason that fueled the construction of the country’s second and main state house in it.

In Luganda, the dominant language spoken in Entebbe, its name means a "seat". Kayamba states that it took on this name as it was where Buganda Chiefs sat when ruling over legal cases. The town served as a British colonial administrative and commercial centre in 1893 under the reign of Sir Gerald Portal, a colonial Commissioner.

The Municipality is one of the fastest growing in the country and blossoms with state of art infrastructure from the Airport to State house, over to the roads. This has in turn attracted lots of residents and offices, a growth which has translated into tailless traffic jam especially in the peak hours of the day. Accordingly, one of the Municipalities priorities is expanding its roads to accommodate more traffic. The expansion will also see the boundaries of the town stretched to Katabi Area.

It sits within the boundaries of Wakiso District and is surrounded by Lake Victoria and Taita bay to the South East and West respectively. It is 37 kilometers south of Kampala and lies at 0˚.04N, 32˚.28E.

As per findings of the 2002 Uganda Population and Housing Census, Entebbe’s population was 55,086 persons with an annual population growth rate of 2.2 percent between 1991 and 2002. It has a population density of 980 persons per square kilometer and an average household size of 4 persons.

“Of the total population, 78 percent was aged less than 30years. The projected 2012 population stands at 83,200 persons.” states the 2002 report of Uganda Bureau of Standards.

Situated on the shores of Lake Victoria and at the Source of the Nile, Jinja is a picturesque town that is an ideal getaway from the hustle and bustle of the city. At 3986 feet above sea level, Jinja enjoys a pleasant climate all year long and is only 75km from the capital (Kampala) and 115km from Entebbe airport.

With a population close to 150,000, Jinja is the largest metropolitan area in Jinja District and is considered the capital of the Busoga Kingdom. “Jinja”, which means “Rock”, originates from the language of the two tribal natives (the Baganda and the Basoga) that lived on either side of the River Nile in the area.
In it's hayday, Jinja was the manufacturing capitol of East Africa. Today, Jinja is a very well-designed town best described as "laid-back", "peaceful" and "tranquil" by its many international visitors. Jinja is quite simply the perfect getaway town.

Fantastic offers at Brovad sands lodge , Samuka Island Jinja , Simba safaris in Queen Elizabeth.
